The rate of speed development, so how fast you can get up to speed, is a critical factor in successful athletic performance.  A perfect example is in the video below.

Watch these highlights from one of my favorite athletes, Pavel Bure.


My favorite part about these clips is how ordinary Bure makes these other professional athletes look when he blows by them.  You would almost think the opposing players were not of NHL calibre.  How does Bure make it look so easy?

No doubt Pavel Bure was an extraordinary talent.  His acceleration often took defenseman by surprise and led to breakaways.  Re-watch the video and look at his first few strides: their short and quick.

Next time your out practicing consider doing some very short-fast-repetitions.  The faster you can get up to speed, the harder it will be able to stop you.
