Relax: Your Nervous System Will Thank You

Restoring the body is typically included in a cool down or by sitting and watching TV.  Restoring the mind is often overlooked aspect in training and in life.

Lowering the body’s heart rate after a workout to resting level is the primary goal of a restorative session. Inhalations through the nose and mouth followed by long exhales from the mouth will decrease heart rate.  Concentrating on this rhythmic task will naturally clear the mind and free it of excess thoughts.  Listening to songs that are soft in nature and that have a slower beat can help with achieving this lower state of arousal. Try incorporating this ‘mental workout’ after each intense workout or work session.
